SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS APART

Happy Thanksgiving Eve y’all!! I’m sad to say that B and I are kicking off the holidays apart. Brad left Saturday to spend the week at home in Wisconsin and as some of you might have seen I’ll be headed to California on Thursday {the worst travel day of the year…lord help me} for the long weekend. As excited as we both are to see loved ones, friends, and do/see favorite things it’s took us about 45 minutes to figure out that spending the holidays apart is not ideal. As much as we both want to be home, we feel even more drawn to be together during these special times. Instead of a sad story about how much we miss each other though, we thought we would share the things we’ve learned from spending the holidays apart the past couple years. We know we certainly aren’t the only one’s and thought we’d share our positive outlook. We hope some of you can relate or that it helps you feel a little better about not spending the holidays with your person.

1. A little distance can do a lot to help your relationship grow. We all need our own space and time to ourselves and we have found that the holidays are particularly perfect for giving yourselves a little room to grow in your relationship. We always realize how much we miss each other the second that we realize we don’t get to see each other the next day. {Yes we still miss each other even though we live together}

2. We remember how blessed we are to have each other and how thankful we are to get to share our life together. We all know that Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and Christmas is a time for giving and family but the whole holiday season is cloaked in love and reminds us what love is, what it means to us, and what it feels like to be surrounded by it.

3. We’ve learned that as we continue to grow together, spending these special times apart becomes harder than we realize. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to feel torn during the holidays though because it means that you think of your significant other as family as well.

4. It allows us to reflect on all the time we DO get to spend together and think back to some our favorite memories thus far and everything still to come. It’s human nature to get caught up in everything that life throws at us and even sometimes take advantage of everything we do have so it’s nice to have a chance to reflect on all the good.

5. It makes us that much more excited for the future. B and I have always said that our goal to eventually host all of our family together for the holidays so that we can all be together. I’m sure some of you think that’s nuts because…well I’m sure we all have holiday horror stories BUT to anyone who has ever missed a holiday at home, you know how much you missed it. Craziness and all. We can’t wait to have all the crazy under one roof

We want to wish everyone a Happy {early} Thanksgiving. Travel safe, near or far, and remember to enjoy the holiday, however you may be spending it!!
