Burying the Bourbon

Today we celebrate four years together and 30 days before forever.

When we first started wedding planning I knew I wanted to find ways to really personalize our big day and incorporate our story and where we come from. It's no secret that the weather in the Midwest is very unpredictable and since the day we decided that Kansas City is where we wanted to get married, my mom has been so nervous about what the weather might or might not do on the day. Of course I know that things like weather are completely out of my control, but a couple months after we got engaged I found a unique southern wedding tradition called Burying the Bourbon. For those of you who don't know or are new around here, Brad and I met at school in Kentucky. We loved our time in the South and have always talked about moving back in the future. The tradition states if you bury a bottle of bourbon upside down, 100 feet from where you'll be married a month before your wedding day, then you will have beautiful weather! And then, to celebrate the occasion, after your ceremony, as husband and wife, you dig up your bourbon and share it with your wedding party! I don't know about you guys but we think thats one hell of a way to kick off your marriage!!

It just so happens that we had a special edition bottle of Makers Mark that we had hand dipped at the distillery in Louisville two years before and hadn't quite figured out the right occasion to enjoy it. So, yesterday we headed up to our wedding venue with bourbon, shovel, and photographer in hand to capture our sweet little wedding tradition. As we walked toward the fence line, I asked Brad if he was ready and he simply squeezed my hand a little bit tighter and I felt so excited to finally get to become his wife in just four short weeks.

After we buried our bourbon and snapped a few pictures, we took one more look before heading back towards the cars. As we walked away, I couldn't help but feel like the last four years have brought us full circle. From our very first date, to our road trip to Louisville, surviving long distance, through ups and downs, and our trip back to Kentucky for the Derby which allowed us to incorporate where we fell in love into our new home state and our wedding day.
